Health Insurance
What Is Health Insurance?
Health insurance, also called medical insurance, is a contract where the insurer agrees to pay for your hospitalisation and medical expenses in exchange for an annual premium. In India, policies work in two primary modes: cashless and reimbursement. Under cashless hospitalisation, you are admitted to a network hospital empanelled with your insurer, and the hospital directly settles the approved bill with the insurance company — you pay only the non-covered items or any deductible. Under the reimbursement method, you pay the hospital bills out of pocket and then submit the original bills and discharge summary to the insurer for repayment. Cashless is far more convenient and is the preferred mode for planned procedures.
A standard individual health plan covers in-patient hospitalisation (requiring a minimum 24-hour admission), pre-hospitalisation expenses typically for 30 days before admission, and post-hospitalisation expenses for 60 days after discharge. Modern policies also cover day care procedures — over 500 procedures like cataract surgery or chemotherapy that no longer require overnight stays due to medical advances. A family floater plan is a cost-effective option where a single sum insured is shared among all family members. For example, a Rs. 10 lakh floater for a family of four means any one member or a combination of members can claim up to Rs. 10 lakh in a policy year. Floaters are economical when family members are young and healthy.
One of the most valuable features of health insurance is the No-Claim Bonus (NCB), also called Cumulative Bonus. For every claim-free year, the insurer increases your sum insured by 5%–50% depending on the policy, without any additional premium. This means a Rs. 5 lakh policy can grow to Rs. 10 lakh over consecutive claim-free years. IRDAI also mandates that all health policies offer lifelong renewability, which means the insurer cannot refuse to renew your policy simply because you have filed claims or grown older. It is critical to buy health insurance early, before developing pre-existing conditions like diabetes or hypertension, as pre-existing diseases typically attract a 2–4 year waiting period before they are covered.

Common Questions
Family Health Insurance FAQs
A family floater plan is a single health insurance policy that covers the entire family — typically you, your spouse, and dependent children — under one shared sum insured. The premium is lower than buying individual plans for each member, and any member can use the full sum insured in a given policy year.
Restoration (or recharge) benefit automatically reinstates your sum insured if it is partially or fully exhausted during the policy year due to claims. This is especially useful in family floater plans where multiple members may need hospitalisation in the same year. Most plans restore the sum insured once per year; some offer unlimited restorations.
Yes, many family floater plans offer maternity cover as an in-built or add-on benefit. It typically covers normal and caesarean delivery expenses up to a specified sub-limit. There is usually a waiting period of 9 months to 2 years before the maternity benefit becomes active. Newborn cover from day one is commonly included.
Pre-existing diseases are covered after a waiting period, which is typically 2 to 4 years depending on the insurer and plan. Some premium plans offer PED coverage from day one or with a shorter waiting period of 12 months. It is important to disclose all PEDs accurately at the time of buying the policy to avoid claim rejections.
Yes, most family floater plans allow you to add new members — such as a newborn, newly married spouse, or dependent parent — at the time of policy renewal. Some insurers allow mid-term addition of a newborn baby within 90 days of birth. Adding a new member may result in a revised premium based on the new member's age and health status.
