Motor Insurance

What Is Motor Insurance?

Motor insurance in India is governed by the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, which makes Third-Party (TP) liability insurance mandatory for all vehicles on public roads. A TP policy covers legal liability arising from injury, death, or property damage caused to a third party due to your vehicle. The TP premium is fixed by IRDAI and is non-negotiable across insurers. A Comprehensive policy goes beyond TP cover to also include Own Damage (OD) — compensating you for loss or damage to your own vehicle due to accidents, theft, fire, floods, earthquakes, vandalism, or other perils listed in the policy. Comprehensive plans are strongly recommended for newer or financed vehicles.

A critical concept in motor insurance is Insured Declared Value (IDV), which represents the current market value of your vehicle and acts as the maximum claim amount. IDV depreciates each year as your vehicle ages — a two-year-old car may have an IDV of 80% of the showroom price, dropping further with each renewal. At claim time, standard policies deduct depreciation on replaced parts based on their age. This is where the Zero Depreciation add-on (also called Nil Dep or Bumper-to-Bumper cover) is highly valuable — it ensures you receive the full cost of replaced parts without any depreciation deduction, making it especially worthwhile for new vehicles in the first three to five years.

Motor insurance must be renewed every year without a break to retain your No-Claim Bonus (NCB). NCB is a discount on the OD premium component, starting at 20% after one claim-free year and growing up to 50% after five consecutive claim-free years. A lapse of even a few days forfeits your NCB, so set renewal reminders well in advance. For claims, you can drive or tow your vehicle to a network garage for cashless repairs, where the insurer directly settles the approved repair cost with the garage. Alternatively, you can use a non-network garage and claim reimbursement later. Always file an FIR for theft cases and inform your insurer within the stipulated time — usually 24–48 hours for accidents and immediately for theft.

Car or Bike? Here's What Changes

Motor insurance has distinct rules depending on your vehicle type.

Car Insurance

IDV Calculation

IDV is calculated as Manufacturer's Listed Price minus depreciation based on vehicle age (5–50%). Accessories are added separately.

Premium Rates

Third-party premium is IRDAI-mandated based on engine CC. Own damage premium varies by IDV, make/model, and add-ons chosen.

Mandatory Covers

  • •Third-party liability (mandatory by Motor Vehicles Act)
  • •Personal accident cover for owner-driver (₹15 lakh — mandatory)
  • •Own damage if the vehicle has a loan
Cars depreciate faster in the first 3 years. Zero dep add-on is highly recommended for new cars to avoid depreciation deductions at claims.

Which Plan Type Suits You?

Motor insurance comes in three main structures.

Third-Party Only

Covers

  • Damage to third-party vehicle
  • Third-party property damage
  • Third-party bodily injury or death

Own Damage Only

Covers

  • Damage to your own vehicle (accident, fire, flood)
  • Theft of your vehicle
  • Natural calamities (flood, earthquake)

Does Not Cover

  • Third-party damage or injury
  • Cannot be purchased standalone without TP

Best for: Supplementing an existing standalone TP policy

Common Questions

Two Wheeler Insurance FAQs

Yes, third-party two wheeler insurance is mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Riding without valid insurance can result in a fine of Rs. 2,000 for the first offence and Rs. 4,000 for subsequent offences, along with possible imprisonment.

Third-party insurance only covers damages or injuries caused to a third party. Comprehensive insurance additionally covers your own bike against accidents, theft, fire, floods, and other natural or man-made calamities, giving you complete protection.

Premium depends on factors like your bike's engine cubic capacity (cc), age of the vehicle, Insured Declared Value (IDV), city of registration, No Claim Bonus (NCB), and any add-ons you choose. Third-party premiums are fixed by IRDAI annually.

NCB is a discount offered on your own damage premium for every claim-free year. It starts at 20% after the first claim-free year and can go up to 50% after five consecutive claim-free years, significantly reducing your renewal premium.

Yes, two wheeler insurance can be transferred to the new owner within 14 days of the sale. The seller's NCB can be retained by obtaining an NCB retention letter from the insurer. The new owner must inform the insurer and complete the transfer formalities.
